One of my best friends works at AWAC and I'm constantly astounded at the difference in make up of our seniority lists. Many, many of SkyWest's top 25% have no desire to move on, they live and are based in a place that would take them half a decade to get back to if they went to a major. Some came to SkyWest intending to leave, but a great many came with the intent to make it a career. From what my buddy tells me, this is not the case at AWAC. You guys will a helluva lot more movement than places like SkyWest or Eagle will come 2012 and beyond.
And a career at a regional can be a decent thing. If you drive to work, earn enough money, live where you like to live, etc. it's a great thing. But many of us just don't have that. I honestly hope there are a lot of folks who are happy at their company. But I also know a lot who are ready to move on from ours.
That said, I'm 44 now so while there's still time for a good career elsewhere that clock
is ticking. So I make the most of it and if I get stuck here for a long time (like forever) I can also sleep at night knowing that it isn't really horrible either. I make decent money, only ever work more than 15 days in month if I choose to do so, have decent seniority, etc.
I'm ready to move on but if I can't then I can live with it too.
As to the phenomenon of the 5-year RJ F/Os? That's not because anyone wants that, it's because there's practically nowhere to go at the moment.
