In the example you gave with a 1200 show/1300 departure and scheduled rest starting at 2100, scheduling might give you a call block on your master schedule that shows 0800-1159 LBT. That would mean on call from 8AM until your trip report time. Your duty day would begin at 0800. And, yes, you need to make sure you plan your commute to be in position at the beginning of your reserve call block.
Just to add: B reserves who aggressive pick up trip can have that paring/id removed from their schedule and put on a call window. This is solely at the discretion of crew scheduling and yes it happens. I would not count on aggressive picking up a paring/id on B reserve and keeping it. Our scheduling department operates in crisis management mode at all times as we are severely understaffed.

"A" reserve has slightly different rules for the first day of your reserve block.

Sec 25.11.6.c

“A” Reserves that pickup in the aggressive window will be released to their Pairing nine (9) hours prior to report, except that “A” Reserves that pickup Trips that begin on the first day of their reserve block will have no phone availability obligation prior to Pairing origination.
