From Communication #11 (9/23/11):
Since the last communication I have received a flood of phone calls and emails, all asking the same question; “what is the bypass rate!!!” I have been hesitant to provide this information because it is a moving number and has changed dramatically. With the first group of pilots we contacted, the most senior 100 on the list (and when I refer to the list, it is the furlough list that contains all pilots on furlough including the voluntary furloughed pilots), the bypass rate was approximately 4 to 1. This means we asked four furloughed pilots to get one furloughed pilot to accept the Continental position. When we moved into the second 100 most senior pilots on the list this bypass rate increased to almost 9 to 1. The jump was primarily attributed to the massive increase of pilots, in that portion of the list, that had military commitments. This drove the need to send out the additional 150 letters. We now stand at 350 deep on the furlough list and that person had a United hire date of 10/19/99.
Continental has been closely watching the response rate with this last round of letters. The decision has been made to send out another wave of offer letters to the next 250 pilots on the list. These letters could go out as early as Friday, September 23, 2011. This will get us 600 deep on the furlough list and that furloughed pilot had a United hire date of 2/21/2000. This should fill the classes at Continental through the end of the year and there are 3 classes in November and two in December. Once the last class in December has been filled, there will be approximately 103 slots still available under this current bid for 2012. As a reminder, the classes in 2012 will increase to 16 pilots per class.
