I'm a native as well and I'm not quite sure which chicago you're speaking of.
I've lived in Chicago for 23 years and I don't know what the lake has to do with it? There is 4 sets of highways that can get you into and out of the city, if traffic bothers you live closer to ORD or MDW. There is plenty of decent neighborhoods that will allow 30-40min commutes that aren't dangerous or over priced.
