Last time I checked, people who hire vendors do not work for them.
I work with my vendors all the time to ensure they become better vendors. Our pilot volunteers do the same thing. But the vendor is arrogant, deaf and is certain you'll never fire them. As Lee Seham correctly states, ALPA keeps their status in the same way a wife beater keeps his wife: "Look honey, I know you hate me...and you're right. But you'll never make it out there on your own. You need me, and I'll really try to never hit you again."
Pretty sick example, but it's how ALPA stays in power. It's certainly not through results.
