The reality is probably more along the lines of: Delta was a first mover in the big consolidation game and now needs to wait its turn until the other players have executed their moves. In the meantime it will be status-qou while the company grows virtually via our partners, JV and otherwise...

I believe the airline industry has regulated itself as legally and as best they can. Everyone has their territory, don't trespass on me and I won't trespass on you. Now, to hold down costs we'll outsource and whipsaw. To expand we'll merge with the intent to reduce capacity to increase contribution margins. We'll also join an alliance and make JVs.
Target numero uno by each airline seems to be... employees and vendors.
Oh but we'll get new airplanes! To replace old ones, but not completely. Oh but we'll expand through merger! But we won't expand the size of the two companies. But we'll hire! But will the total pilot group number grow or shrink?
Everyone is doing the same thing. I'm not getting excited until they say- we're growing.
