The hat is a symbol of a bygone era, and if you look around at crews worldwide today, you'll find that most airlines have ditched it. It definitely has a timeless and classy look, but, just like the F/A hat, it has gone by the wayside.

I like the optional rule... those that like it, wear it... those that don't, don't. End of story. It has nothing to do with professionalism. A hatless pilot with a buttoned blazer and everything neat looks just as professional.
