It is definitely the anonymity that Internet forums and comment streams provide. Looking at just about any online community, including comment streams for news stories on local and national news outlets, you can see that there is a great deal of poor communication that would never be tolerated in person. Which is a shame. Too bad you can't donkey punch someone over the Internet... it would make people that hide behind keyboards think twice regarding what they are about to say.
