Its happened. True story. A few years ago over New Mexico. Some guy was gonna "dead stick" his experimental in the desert and was too low for ATC reception. He asked anyone who could hear him on guard to relay to ATC his LAT/LON. Some knucklehead chimes in "you're on guard." His reply was something "no sh!t, please relay my position."
