It has nothing to do with airplane mode, it's the fact that it's an electronic device and needs to be turned off. 70% of general passengers and some flight crew think that their phone is no longer an electronic device when in airplane mode. Therefore the FA's have to dumb it down and say "no airplane mode" in addition to "no electronic devices"
