Your sources are ill-informed. I've spent WAY too much time in the training department this past year, and spoke to newhires as recently as last week. I'd guess 90% or more of our newhires have turbine PIC, and plenty of it. Single-seat fighter guys, RJ guys, a couple corporate guys, and, I'm proud to say furloughed UAL, ATA, AbEx, AStar, etc. are all getting hired. PIC or AC time, lots of it, is virtually a requirement to get hired here, though, if you know the right people, like anywhere, you can get on with just a pulse.

. . . in addition to completing and submitting the application on line, what other magical ingredients does one need to simply get that interview? . . . I applied November of 2011 . . .
Internal recommendations and patience. Just about every pilot getting hired here lately has had someone on the inside pulling (met a guy last week who went to a Spirit job fair - no internals). Even then, there is a huge stack of qualified candidates, and we'll likely pass on some great guys (we already have, please don't give up, we want you here). Be patient, and try to work an internal connection. Apply to other carriers too - Spirit isn't the only fish in the sea, and you can always hang out @ Southwest or FedEx until Spirit calls.
