Like others here, I've done both. Nearing the end of the second career, I have far more TIME in the left seat of a widebody transport. I have far more EXPERIENCE in a single seat jet. Flight time comes in big chunks in a transport, but experience comes in drips and drabs. The reverse is true in a fighter.
With regard to getting hired at FedEx, however, the whole discussion is moot. FedEx has put the initial screening process in the hands of a guy who has done neither, and who seems to have little to no grasp of what makes a good line pilot. Ask any instructor or check airman who attended the brief. Apparently, going to the "right" college is more important than flight time OR experience.
