You answered your own question. Flight crews cannot deduct travel expenses for day trips. The method you describe in Question 1 (above) would be the method for determining your per-diem deduction for travel away from your tax home.

If you don't have time for sufficient rest during your stop, it's still considered a day trip. Sufficient rest doesn't mean it complies with FARs but most likely would involve a hotel room and not just a nap at an out-station.

You really fly 12 hours, sit for 2 hours and fly back?
