They didn't 'try to', they DID charge, but it was for the Cup, not the coffee! It was 50 cents per paper cup. That's why the PE guys always brought their own coffee mugs with them! That way, they could drink free coffee all day, and then later the F/A's would show up at the layover hotel pool with some of the cash they had from selling the seats on board, and spring for happy hour!
