The problem in our profession is we never know when that day will be, so we have to train for it like it will be on our next takeoff, enroute segment, or landing. So we have to be ready every day. Most of the time--its complete overkill. I had my fun in the F-15...I LIKE boring flights now. Boring is good...

My pay was earned this year preventing a captain from crossing a runway he didn't have clearance to cross. After watching runway safety videos and briefings ad nauseum for years it finally happened to me, but with a good outcome. I hope 2012 is nice and boring too, but I'll try to be ready for anything.

So--glorified bus driver? Maybe some days. But that one day every now and then you need the experience, diligence, and professionalism from your crews the pay they earn is very inexpensive compared to the price of mistakes...
