My pay was earned this year preventing a captain from crossing a runway he didn't have clearance to cross. After watching runway safety videos and briefings ad nauseum for years it finally happened to me, but with a good outcome. I hope 2012 is nice and boring too, but I'll try to be ready for anything.

So--glorified bus driver? Maybe some days. But that one day every now and then you need the experience, diligence, and professionalism from your crews the pay they earn is very inexpensive compared to the price of mistakes...

An old, Vietnam-era Marine pilot explained it exactly the same way to me about 25 yrs ago.
