What they do not charge us is the taxes and airport facilities fees from each flight taken. They absorb that. They also absorb the tax hit for it being a benefit that can be hit against your income, just like a company provided car.
50 bucks irks me to, but the fact is that they could really nickel and dime us on more than just the annual fee and the customs taxes. Personally, I want nonrev benefits codified in our PWA so that they cannot change them on a whim; fees, allotments etc.
Some here may remember when the IRS proposed charging us personal income taxes on our passes, using the full coach fare as the imputed value. This was about 30 years ago, and a vigorous lobbying effort with Congress fended it off. It probably helped when Congressmen realized that such a plan might make some of
their perks taxable too.
