Not wheels first...."Sideways" is the only way to get them in.
Having had only LW for the last 16 years, wouldn't buy anything different. I orignally had the 22", but needed the extra space (thus buying the 26") for the longer international trips. After buying the 26", I sent the 22" back in to get over-hauled, and keep it as a "back-up" when the 26" goes in every few years for service (zippers, occational wheel replacement, handle, ect...). Don't remember the 'over-haul' price, but worth doing as long as you have a second one for a spare.
FWIW - Bottom line.....If your "commuter", and can get away with the 22", that's the one I'd buy. Being 'last on' when commuting offline, finding the last bit of overhead space with the smaller one (the one that fits wheels first) is always easier than storing the 26".
