I think you got the majority of the reason: Training costs. 744B and 777B can already hold M88/90A, so why would they displace directly to it. Instead you'd have a downward training cascade as the guy above you bumps you.
Additionally, it the crew resources news, they said they wanted to shrink ATL 777 and grow DTW 777. Remember, when you take off from ATL to go to asia, 2 hours later you're over DTW. That is a lot of credit to chop off each rotation (approx 3-4 hrs).
