In the electric-only drive range, you can drive up to 75 mph. As a comparison, in the Volt or Prius, to be in electric-only drive you need to be going about 30 mph or less.
Not true with the Volt. It will drive around on electric up to normal highway speeds. At high speed (70 mph +/-), a clutch engages and both the engine and battery drive the car.
The VW is a nice car. My concern would be the cost. I'm personally waiting for the Ford Fusion plug-in
