I play with a couple local orchestras, but pay is beyond dismal. Teaching private students pays well, but drumming up enough business to pay the bills is difficult, and obviously no benefits.
True...there really is no money in music unless you get lucky enough to land with a reputable orchestra. And talk about no job security, you can be challenged out of your seat at any time.
