The only way it would not be 243 new hires is if some of the many CAL pilots on long term leaves (personal, mil, furlough bypass, etc) come back during the year. I don't know of any way to predict how many will come back. But, I would imagine there will be quite a few.

You may be correct, but watching the last two bids, I don't think so.
The vacancy bid lists a decrease in the MIN number of 737 pilots required in IAH/NYC/CLE (likely for the DEN/ORD shift in 737 flying). Unless the company staffs to the current/MAX number in those 3 737 bases it will not be 243.
If they staff to the MIN level as they did on the practice bid, the number would be 165.
