I hope they have a lot of ipad SME's on hand for the days leading up to the mandatory carry date. There are many pilots who don't want the financial responsibility for a useless brick, let alone the privacy issues.
I can't carry it until at least one manual is gone from my the flight kit.
OTOH, there are a lot of folks who don't know what a touch screen is and don't want to learn. My questions are not when can the iPad replace the manual completely, but when will it be mandatory to carry it and when will they stop updating the hard copies of the manuals. When that day comes, there will be guys without a paper FOM fumbling around with an iPad for the first time trying to find the on/off switch.
