No, there is no exception. There's nothing in the regs you quoted which even remotely support what you just said.

I'm sure there may have been confused examiners in the past, but I suspect the airlines have long since resolved that sort of confusion. What are they going to do, let you go all the way through upgrade training, and then on checkride day, oops nevermind? That examiner would find himself doing something else pretty quick. Also any airline will pre-screen their upgrade candidates BEFORE class convenes...whatever they want you to have, they will have already verified that you have it.
