Most of JFK is built on former swamp. No matter how they tried to engineer the tunnels it was a giant nightmare and as you mentioned way beyond anything they could consider cost effective. Terminal 8 in JFK is the new focus. It would work perfect for us.
I believe EWR is over a swamp too.
One day when I was at Coex I made the run from Terminal C to A to catch an ATL flight. I missed the first one but was waiting for the second when I noticed the 737 had stopped on the middle of the ramp after push back. Soon stairs were sent to the airplane and then people got off the airplane and began walking in. The right main had fallen into the pavement. For weeks there was a cone in the hole to let you know don't go there.
I can't remember if I got out of EWR that day or not. I probably did. It's all a blur.
