Very interesting article Bar.
It is interesting about Embraer dithering on whether to join Bombardier in trying to capture a portion of the A&B market. But what Embraer did right was throw out the smaller regional size jet built on turboprop chassis and went big and clean which they can improve upon. Bombardier stretched the CRJ and when it came time to jump into the bigger market it is saturated, especially on the 80 seat bottom end by their own airplane. So for a while their CRJ stretch paid off but now they needed/wanted to go big which meant needing to go "smart", which wasn't cheap. So both firms gambled and honestly it ain't over yet but Embraer probably isn't upset right now.
Three things, notice Embraer is waiting for the GTF to come down to the E190. Will Embraer and Bombardier need to wait much longer for the GTF to come on down to 50 seat aircraft? Is the report of the 50 seaters' death being exaggerated?
Second, there is a study that says 65% of hybrid owners will not buy another hybrid. I wonder if that's analogous to what's going on here but on a scale? When you see how long it takes you to break even on the initial purchase price of a hybrid vs a conventional gas guzzler, is it worth it?
Third, Bombardier ought to change who they're selling that thing to. They ought to skip the airlines and sell it to...
as a "size optimized" small mainline airframe.
