It was definitely more of an annoyance when the CA didn't do the walkaround on the 757 or non-ER 767s... loading all those winds on a transcon takes a while. It saves a lot of time on the uplink equipped planes like the ETOPS 75/76's, certain 737s and all the 319/320s!
As far as that DC-9, apparently one had an engine deposit its innards all over one of the inboard runways at ATL yesterday. Yowza.
80, those that don't; and the number is rising, just don't offer. They don't do anything but read the news of their phone. As for the winds, load them at TOC if you can't get em done.
Never sweat the small stuff. As Sink is pointing out, just nod and do your job. CRM is a two way street and by leg three or four, over half that wouldn't do, and we go on our way.
As for the 9, yep, it left baby engine parts all over the runway, and quite a mess to pick up.
