I understand what you are saying - that he is #70 in the Company (which is what, top 40% of the Company?) and that he is "senior".
If he wanted to get good lines
at his base of choosing he shouldn't of upgraded. He could probably hold it as an FO (my guess) since he is pretty far up the list there. He is trading living in the base he wants/home every night for bidding power. That's how it's done at EVERY seniority based airline.
If Colgan only had three bases would he be able to live at home? What are the chances that the base he is in would be a permanent domicile? Also, if Colgan had regular hub basing (vs. outstation) this guy wouldn't be at home every night.
I want to hold my base of choosing as a CA and be the #1 bidder - but my seniority won't allow it. We must also have some crazy thing known as "seniority" here too.
