I'd say that anything above 2 is excessive. In no way is it necessary to have more than an overnight bag and a flight case for a 4-5 day regional airline trip, even if counting commuting/reserve time. Of course, there will be exceptions, such as having to carry a garment bag or something.

The amount of pilots who go through the airport looking like they're going on an Everest expedition... or like they're homeless and bringing all their belongings with them... is rediculous.

You don't see mainline crews or international airline crews, who do much longer trips, with this amount of stuff with them. Yes, there are a few exceptions as always, but for the most part... its overnight bag and flight case. If you can't fit all the stuff you need in those two items, you need to re-evaluate what you're bringing with you and how you pack it.
