I spoke to a CFI teaching out of San Carlos (SQL) recently. He said he and his colleagues keep what they charge per hour ($60-75/hr) and at least one of them makes $100k/yr. I didn't argue with him.

I would suggest moving to an area with good weather and lots of rich people with lots of spare time. For LA that sounds like Santa Monica. You're not going to fly 100/mo without really trying however!
