The U. S. airline industry seems well on its way to becoming an oligopoly, after years of consolidation, Barron's says. Industry analysts say the consolidation that has occurred in recent years has led to more pricing power in what is essentially a commodity product. Under this scenario, American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK), a relatively disruptive force leading up to its bankruptcy filing in late November, could eventually be swallowed up by US Air, Barron's reports, leaving a big three with enhanced market power. This should benefit Delta (DAL), US Airways Group (LCC) and, most of all, United Continental Holdings (UAL).
