I love that kind of advice from the guy who is 45-50 and still at a regional. Being a subtle turd is NOT an ART, but telling people how to be a subtle turd does make you a turd.
I do agree with the second half of your statement, but again, I do not want to fly with some guy who just came off the ATR, and leaves JFK and goes to 240 KTs giving me a tour of upstate NY when we need to be heading towards COATE. I also do not want a tour of the Jersey Shore because some guy wants to descend at 1000 feed a minute going into JFK. FO or Captain if your out of your element just roll with the guy your with. 90% of the pilots are great, but the 10% suck, and are tools, and make things harder for the 90% because everyone is then scared to ever talk to someone they dont know.
Ha - my favorite was the guy who would descend into PHX at 1000fpm and hit the wake of the guy in front of us at every crossing restriction and wonder why.
No good Captain wants a subtle FO. They want a teammate. I insisted that my FOs be vocal and assertive. And if they wanted to be lazy, that was fine too. But I expected them to be on their A game when in control of the aircraft.
Have you heard of the concept known as "normalization of deviance"? Apply the model to the RJ Captain who wants a subtle FO. I feel for you man - I do.
