Default What Makes A Good DJ/MC?

The vagabond family is hosting a party in a couple of weeks. The original plan was to just have people come, pig out, go home; however, something made me decide to get a DJ or a small band. A friend's 14 year old son has a band, but its name is "Septic Tank" and I have a queasy feel about a group that would choose a name like that. I'm sure the kids are great performers, but ...

Anyway, I posted an ad and was promptly inundated with emails from bands and self-professed DJs and MCs. I got everything from a mariachi band to someone offering movie recording and catering along with the music.

I am interested in one guy who owns his own business and has been DJing for 14 years. He quoted a rate of $800 +$50 travel, but just because I'm so cute and cuddly (I think), he's going to do 4 hours of song and dance at $425, half price.

Below is 90% of his email response to me: Thanks so much for your message. I would love an opportunity to be part of your celebration. My service is full and complete. It includes professional sound equipment (appropriately sized to your group) as well as a wireless microphone for any announcements and/or toasting. I come dressed appropriately (tux to business casual) for your event.

You have as much input into the music selection as you would like. My music catalog is in excess of 60,000 songs from the 1930s to the latest hits of today. Without knowing the format/plans for your celebration (and your musical tastes) it is difficult for me to tell you at this point what I would play. However, rest assured it will be appropriate for you and your guests.

As the MC (master of ceremonies), my duties are to make any needed announcements to keep the guests informed as to what/when things will be taking place. Again, without knowing about your plans it is difficult for me to give a more detailed response.

If it would be helpful, I would welcome a chance to chat on the phone, hear more about the plans and answer your questions in more detail. I can be reached most anytime today

Does anybody have further insight into choosing the right one? Is that price reasonable? I would think any halfway competent DJ should be able to "read" the guests and make adjustments. I certainly wouldn't want some guy to keep playing the same song over and over, or all songs by the Bee Gees or something. The guests range in age from 8 years old to 98 years old.
