We parked many widebodies in the desert rather than pay that enormous cost. Would they not be able to just park them and pay the lease obligation until the end of the agreement?
This is exactly what Delta has decided to do at the Comair subsidiary. We have piles of 50s parked in the desert waiting for lease expiration so we can dust them off and give them back to the bank.
Cheaper that way.
