FDNY doesn't pay much better although I'd love to have their schedules! Most guys on the job(fire and police) I know work elsewhere at least on some of their days off to supplement their sh!tty income. Suffolk County PD on the other hand...you start at 60K and are over 100K, not including OT and night differential, by year 5. They're having a test this Spring.
I'm a firefighter...you're right, the schedules are sweet. There's a place near my city that has a 2-on, 6-off schedule (granted the 2 on are 48hrs in a row, but you're paid to sleep and goof off half of the time)...it was a great supplement to my pilot income, and the fire service is the best job in the world (or maybe second best)...the pay ins't that bad either if you have your paramedic cert.
