I agree with your points above in that the thread was indeed controversial or emotional, and (at first) it was informative or educational.
But it didn't stay there. It devolved into a very ugly arena of name-calling, accusations, allegations, racism, and race-baiting. Frankly, I found it embarrassing that these were posts by "professional" airline pilots.
It wasn't constructive debate. It was destructive. we don't need to further divide the UAL/CAL contract fight against the Company into "Race-A UAL / Race-B CAL /Race-A Cal /Race-C UAL, etc. Unity.
As an APC user, you are bound to the TOS. I've excerpted appropriate sections below. The bottom line is:
1. There are rules of decorum on this site.
2. You have to abide by them.
3. Posts that violate TOS can be deleted.
4. If it doesn't suit your purposes, find another site.
Multiple posts by multiple people violated the four bullet points at the bottom. It was easier to delete the whole thread than violate multiple users.
I didn't delete it, but brought it to the attention of someone much higher in the food-chain. He felt the same as I did.
Highlights below added by me:
Yes the thread did de-grade to name calling and as you call it "race-baiting" but that is what happens when you have a systematic spoils based system. Having said that, some of the comments were uncharacteristic of a highly educated professional airline pilot and it needed to be terminated or locked but certainly not removed
