Well ....... I have been weight restricted in a B747-400 on a 4.5 hours sector before. We were right up at max ZFW due to the cargo carried (iirc coins from the Australian mint being taken up to Singapore), so the sector length and max TOW is not necessarily a factor.
In the case you cite you were most likely limited by maximum landing weight as well as zfw but since the I don't recall there being a mint in atlanta (yes there is a federal reserve ) I think this chap will not have a problem getting a ride...Molon Labe!
