It's probably a lot rougher ride for the pax in the grass off the end, or EMAS, than that less than gentle touchdown.
I too have flown out of many "less than ideal runways" both in this country as well as many island nations nearby. Never found out what the grass or EMAS was like though. I get paid to do some real-life pilot stuff, but if the CA has a problem with what I'm doing he has every right to take it.
