It's not that they wouldn't enjoy having you there in an emergency scenario, it's that they want those seats available to their frequent fliers/business select pax.
Keeping the people who buy lots of tickets happy is just good business.
If the flight is wide open and those seats are open when boarding is complete, grab them.
The tell their own non-revs to stay out of them too, so it's not just offline guys.
