The biggest reason to turn them on is for the things you don't know about.
Clearly you're an inferior pilot if these unknowns bother you. The people who have perfect situational awareness, and who work in an environment where nobody ever makes a mistake don't need any bloody strobes.

Incidentally, I've never been bothered by anti-collision lights in IMC. Maybe it's something that affects each of us to different degrees. When I'm in IMC, I'm looking at the instruments, so I'm missing the light show outside anyway.
