Airlines post 83.4 percent on-time rate for May

U.S. carriers continue to post improved on-time rates, according to a new government report. According to the Bureau of Transportation Services, airlines had an on-time arrival rate of 83.4 percent in May, up from 77.1 percent in the same month last year.

Hawaiian Airlines topped the list with an on-time rate of 94.7 percent while United Airlines ranked last with an on-time rate of 77.8 percent. Dallas-based Southwest Airlines ranked 9th with 84.2 percent of its flights arriving on time and Fort Worth-based American Airlines ranked 13th as 80.3 percent of its flights arrived on time.In May, carriers canceled only 0.9 percent of its scheduled domestic flights, down from 2.1 percent in May 2011.

There was only one flight delayed on the tarmac over three hours, a United Airlines flight on May 27 from Seattle to Washington Dulles that was diverted and sat on the tarmac for 188 minutes. United also had an international flight that violated the four-hour tarmac rule for international travel with a flight from Chicago O'Hare to Tokyo Narita airport that was delayed 284 minutes in Chicago on May 7.
