Our bid packages consist of regular lines, reserve lines, plus a certain number of VTO lines. The VTO line is basically blank when initially awarded. When the company builds the VTO lines from the open time, the VTO line holders bid again.
VTO line quality can be very good in the summer (when very senior pilots are dropping cherry pairings for vacation conflicts).
For the international domiciles, a VTO line will usually contain the long (12-13 day) trips that scheduling has difficulty covering with normal reserves. If the company can't fill a VTO line with flying, then they backfill it with the 24 hour call-ahead reserve.
