If it was to pick up the slack for the ATR in the Caribbean, much of what the ATR does out of SJU can't be done by a CRJ 200, and for the Miami stuff is not required.
Who knows what the over-water ops are for? All I can confirm is that these conversions are truely taking place, and there is no way ExpressJet would spend the $$$ to convert these aircraft for "hopes" of using them somewhere. Your guess is as good as mine, but if the higher ups are telling people these conversions are for American flying, what else could it be?!
