Who knows what the over-water ops are for? All I can confirm is that these conversions are truely taking place, and there is no way ExpressJet would spend the $$$ to convert these aircraft for "hopes" of using them somewhere. ExpressJet's parent company spent tons of money getting the CRJ700's at OO ready for "overwater" ops a few years back. There are still flip cards in the planes today. Pilots all had to pass a computerized test on the ops limits and requirments too... all for "hopes" of using them somewhere.
Not saying either way if this rumor is true. Just saying not all that glitters is gold.
