I think that you're missing the point. In this described situation, this heading centering happens when you're flying in NAV mode, not in heading mode, so it's not about maintaining an "assigned" heading. A Captain requesting that the FO (or vice versa) center the heading bug at every little turn in cruise is indeed annoying. If they're that anal, they can do it.

You can be a professional and not have the heading bug glued to the exact heading all of the time during cruise. One does not have to be anal to be "precise".
