Or perhaps the optimum pilot-to-aircraft ratio at the two subsidiaries are different due to different fleet mixes and operating theaters? Hint: L-UAL has ~110 twin aisle aircraft that rarely, with the exception of west coast to Hawaii, operate with only 2 pilots.
