We used to do the 2hr/100 miler in one leg timed to land just before sunset. Get out stretch, whatever, turn around and fly back at night. Both dual x/c done. The long one is a solo trip.
They changed the regulation in 2010. The 300 mile X-Country can be done with a CFI on board. Supposedly the change was needed because of insurance regulations regarding solo flights in certain complex & multi engine airplanes. Not really buying the justification, but there was also lots of talk about removing the complex aircraft requirement entirely, so maybe it was a trade-off to keep the complex requirement
