Now -- back on thread track. The former Blues may seem like the regular guys back in the fleet after their tours, but there is no doubt that they are *different* DURING their tours! I'm sure that anyone who has met with them at one of the many social events, mixers, around the squadron at P-Cola or El Centro, during the actual show, and so forth know what I'm talking about in this regard.
The same could be said of Topgun IPs. It's all just part of the show/image. The difference is the Blues seemed to fall back into the "just another fleet aviator" mindset easier than Topgun IPs. The former Blues were probably relieved to no longer be under a microscope, while the former Topgun IPs seemed frustrated nobody took things quite as seriously as they had at "the gun school." Eventually, however, their will could be broken.
