This is one of the problems with the "optimizer/sodomizer" - no room for friction... and there's a LOT of friction in the system. Eventually they (the bean counters) will figure out that "optimization" can wind up costing a lot more than allowing the slack. Sometimes they're not real quick on the uptake and need to have things pointed out to them. (In language they understand. $o to $peak.)
If you think that the bean counters (or crew schedulers for that matter) will loose one minutes sleep over how much it "cost" to operate that trip, you've got another think coming. The salaries paid to operate a full (of freight) jet is almost nothing at all. It almost doesn't even factor into the net profit for the trip because it's such a small amount. So 3 times (almost) nothing is still about nothing. It's sad but true.
