Many languages use the term to denote extraordinary hubris. It is probably rooted in testosterone, the producer of which is the cojones. It may seem/sound somewhat rude, but linguistically it has been around a long time and will probably be around for a long time to come.
In social circles, it may not be politically correct. However, it is likely both anatomically and body chemistry correct.
IMO, whether you were an astronaut, especially an early astronaut or a guy in a spacesuit about to do a supersonic parachute jump, the descriptor fits well.
