The goal is to keep the MEC together so that the reps can build some rapport, and work through complicated issues. Pilots that have flown together and gotten to know each other seem to function better. Group meals avoid each pilot at the meeting claiming expenses.
No disrespect Splash but I know how the MEC and ALPA National function having been a part of each for almost 9 years. My point is that cost cutting can save a considerable amount of money, help us through the cash flow crunch and still maintain the objectives you stated. I've seen and signed off on some rather large expenses for group meals/cocktail hour(s) and various other extravagant measures that might astound the membership.
